Panagia Tourliani Monastery

Founded in 1542, this monastery was built by fugitive monks of the Archontissa of Paros who sought asylum on the island of Mykonos in the place where there originally was an old church of The Virgin. In this area, today, the settlement of Ano Mera has developed.

From 1757 to 1767 it was renovated by the holy monk lgnatio Basoula. The dedicated to Assumption of Mary monastery’s church, has a marvelous, carved- wood “baroque” rood temple of  late 18th century, said to have been made in Florence. Also, the icons on the rood screen are attributed to the icon painter Ioannis “of Korfu”.
The architecture of the complex, by the simplicity of its grandeur, impresses the visitor who will carefully observe the marble belfry and the fountain in the courtyard which are elaborately decorated with carvings, typical examples of traditional marble sculpture.
The collection of the monastery includes many old tools and utensils, important religious relics, priestly clothes and post-Byzantine icons.
